Apparently intending to match her predecessor Lalu Prasad, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has ensured that her home state of West Bengal gets more benefits from this year’s railway budget, even promising to upgrade a non-existing station at trouble-torn Lalgarh.

“Lalgarh Junction” was mentioned in the budget speech as one of the 309 stations to be upgraded as ‘adarsh’ stations with all basic facilities. However, railway officials, when contacted, said there was no station or halt at Lalgarh.

When asked about Lalgarh, Banerjee maintained that its neighbouring areas like Midnapore and Bankura stations are to be developed.

Out of the 309 stations identified to be developed as ‘adarsh’ (model) stations, at least 142 were in West Bengal.

Banerjee also promised to set up a 1,000 MW power plant at Adra in Purulia district of West Bengal and a new factory at Kanchrapara-Halishahar Railway complex with an annual capacity of 500 coaches in joint venture mode.

She also promised considering takeover of coach manufacturing units Burn Standard and Braithwaite, both in Bengal and a setting up of a nursing college on railway land in Kolkata.

The minister extended several other infrastructure projects to the state like development of Eastern Industrial Corridor alongside Eastern Freight Corridor.

In a breakthrough judgment, the Delhi High Court on Thursday legalised gay sex among consenting adults holding that the law making it a criminal offence violates fundamental rights.

However, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises homosexuality, will continue for non-consensual and non-vaginal sex.

“We declare section 377 of IPC in so far as it criminalises consensual sexual acts of adults in private is violative of Articles 14, 21 and 15 of the Constitution,” a Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice S Murlidhar said.

The High Court said ‘the provision of section 377 IPC will continue to govern non-consensual penile non-vaginal sex and penile non vaginal sex involving minors’.

The court clarified that “by adults we mean everyone who is 18 years of age or above”.

It further said that this judgement will hold till Parliament chooses to amend the law.

India’s largest lender, State Bank of India and Union Bank of India revised interest rates on foreign currency non-resident bank deposits and non resident external rupee term deposits with immediate effect on Wednesday.

Deposits in US dollar, having 1-2 years maturity, will now carry a rate of 2.61 per cent (2.60 per cent). Those in 2-3 years and 3-4 years maturity will attract 2.53 per cent (2.38 per cent) and 3.12 per cent (2.99 per cent), banks said.

Similarly, deposits in Pound and Euro, having 1-2 years maturity will attract rates 2.70 per cent (2.76 per cent) and 2.50 per cent (2.64 per cent) respectively, banks said.

Deposits in 2-3 years, 3-4 years and 4-5 years, in pound will carry rates 3.32 per cent (2.93 per cent),4.02 per cent (3.55 per cent) and 4.46 per cent (4 per cent) respectively.

Euro deposits in the above maturities will carry rates of 2.84 per cent (2.76 per cent), 3.30 per cent(3.19 per cent) and 3.64 per cent(3.56 per cent).

SBI and UBI also revised their NRE term deposit rates. With this, 1-2 years, 2-3 years and 3 years and above deposits will carry rates of 3.36 per cent (3.35 per cent), 3.28 per cent (3.13 per cent) and 3.87 per cent (3.74 per cent).
